Monitoring a Host Name

Estimated reading: 2 minutes 607 views

While CertMS can monitor both Servers and Certificate Authorities there may be a time when you want to monitor a specific URL or HOST name such as https://certms.com. This is where Host Monitors come into play and setting them up is very easy.

Once you have logged into CertMS go to “Monitors” and click “Host Monitors”

From here you will see all of the Host Monitors you have setup.

To Add a New Host Monitor click the “Add Host Monitor” button in the top left.

Fill out all of the information.

Name – The friendly name you want to give your Host Monitor

Hostname – DNS name or IP address you want CertMS to monitor

Port – The port number the hostname is listening on (i.e. 443)

Frequency – How often you want CertMS to monitor this host

Start Date – The Start date when you want CertMS to do the first scan

Start Time – The Time you want CertMS to scan the host.

Enabled – If you want the Scanner to be enabled or not.

Once you have entered in all the information click “Submit” to save your new Host Monitor. The Host Monitor will show a status of “waiting…” until it is time to run the scan. During the scan the Host Monitor should show a status of “Scanning…”.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Make sure CertMS can reach the Host.
    • Some host IPs may be blocked by a Firewall. For proper scanning make sure that the CertMS appliance can reach the intended host on the port you provided
  • Self Signed Certificates
    • CertMS’ underlying technology used for scanning can sometimes have problems with Self Signed Certificates. If you run into this problem try the following.
      • Add the self signed cert to one of the “Intermediate Certs” under the Settings option. This should allow CertMS to trust the Self Signed Certificate and scan the host.
